With the winter months rolling in, many of us are reluctantly packing away our open-water kit and battening down our scuba hatches, ready for next year. But the shorter nights and colder days shouldn’t put a halt to your diving life, as now is the time to start planning – and training – ahead.

Wherever you may be on your scuba pathway, there’s always something new or different to learn and explore. So, if you harbour ambitions to become an Open Water Instructor, expand your skills repertoire, or move on to your next diver grade, then you need to check out the latest BSAC courses.

Instructor Foundation Course (IFC)

New training season now underway

BSAC has just released the latest dates for all its Instructor Training Scheme (ITS) courses as well as its suite of Skill Development Courses (SDCs) for the remainder of 2025 and into 2026.

All these courses are regionally organised and provide a wide range of training choices.

And the good news is that there are still spaces on most courses listed, and with venues nationwide, it’s easier than ever to search online for the right course, date and location for you.

How to find your next BSAC training course

Previously known as ‘events’, under the new MyBSAC System, BSAC training is now listed as individual ‘courses’, making it easier to navigate.

Simply log in to your MyBSAC and click on ‘Courses’ in the left-hand sidebar to search for your next BSAC training opportunity or go to bsac.com/findacourse where you will find the full list of available ITS courses and SDCs.

What’s new

With the launch of the upgraded MyBSAC platform, BSAC can now offer more flexible options to make booking, paying, and attending a BSAC training course easier than ever:

  • New booking process – with all courses listed within the MyBSAC platform, it’s easy to see at-a-glance what’s coming up. Use the link from the home page or click on ‘Courses’ in the main menu within MyBSAC to see the current list and click ‘View’ for more info or ‘Enter now’ to book.
  • Enhanced course search function - If have a course, location or specific date in mind, you can also use the Sport80 keyword search filter to narrow down your search.
  • Instructor training courses – the popular Instructor Foundation Course (IFC), along with the Snorkel Instructor Training Course & Assessment (SITCA), now offer eLearning in advance, meaning they can be run over one day instead of two. This makes the two courses more accessible and affordable for interested members.

Benefits of progressing your training

With scuba, you can never stand (or fin) still, as there’s always more to learn, experience and enjoy. But if you need a reminder as to the benefits of progressing your training, here are just a few reasons why:

  • It’s fun and sociable! BSAC diving is as much about the friendships and connections as it is about the diving; in fact the two go hand-in-hand. And with the regional Instructor Training Scheme and Skill Development Courses you get the chance to step outside your club and meet, train and learn with new diving friends!
  • Learn new skills. Enhancing your existing diving skills or learning new ones will not only make you a better, safer diver but can also widen your diving horizons.
  • Progress your diver grade. If 2026 is the year you plan to move up to the next diver grade, then including some relevant training in your winter programme, such as Dive Planning and Management or a Nitrox workshop, can boost your diver progression.
  • Open up new experiences. Always wanted to dive deeper, be able to take part in more adventurous, expedition diving or build more specialised scuba skills? Then make your diving ambitions a reality by signing up for a relevant BSAC Skill Development Course. Learn more about the SDCs BSAC offers at bsac.com/sdc
  • Give something back. Pay it forward to your club by training to become a BSAC Instructor. The BSAC Instructor Training Scheme is progressive and rewarding, so if you are a Sports Diver or above, now’s the time to discover more! For more details on the ITS go to bsac.com/its
