As we mark Mental Health Awareness Week 2025, it’s a good moment to reflect on how being part of a community - especially one united by a shared love of the underwater world - can support our mental health and wellbeing.
For BSAC members, the diving community isn’t just about exploring wrecks or clocking dive hours. It’s about connection, camaraderie, purpose, and support—things that are more important than ever in today’s fast-paced, often-isolating world.
Why community matters - above and below the surface
Being part of a club, a dive team, or even just having dive buddies you can count on, brings with it a range of mental health benefits:
1. Combating loneliness
Diving is a social activity by nature. Whether you're planning a club expedition or simply chatting during a surface interval, these interactions help reduce feelings of isolation and bring a sense of togetherness. Many members find that being part of BSAC offers a consistent, welcoming place to connect with others—even outside of the water.
2. A sense of belonging
When you’re part of a dive club, you’re never diving alone. That sense of shared purpose and team spirit can make a huge difference, particularly during difficult times. BSAC clubs offer a space where everyone belongs, no matter your age, background, or dive experience.
3. Purpose and routine
Setting goals like training for your next qualification, helping new members, or planning a club trip—can bring structure and motivation to your life. For many divers, having something to look forward to (and prepare for!) is an invaluable way to support mental wellbeing.
4. Mutual support
Diving is built on trust. We watch out for our buddies underwater, and that same ethos carries through to club life on land. From informal chats to organised wellbeing initiatives, BSAC clubs can be a powerful network of support—whether you’re navigating life’s big challenges or just need someone to talk to.
How to strengthen your dive community connection
Looking to engage more deeply with your club or local diving community? Here are a few ideas:
- Join your club’s next social evening or training night
- Volunteer to help with new diver training or pool sessions
- Organise or attend club trips, even if you're not diving
- Reach out to someone you haven’t seen at the club in a while
- Share your experience with a new member—it might be just the encouragement they need
- Start a conversation about mental health—it’s OK not to be OK
We’re stronger together
This Mental Health Awareness Week, let’s celebrate the power of the diving community - not just for the adventures, but for the friendships, the laughter, and the shared purpose that come with it.
If you’re struggling, know that you’re not alone. Talk to your dive buddies, club members, or seek professional support. Being part of BSAC means you’re part of a community that cares.
