BSAC has become a partner in a new initiative to help grow ocean literacy and grow the native love for the seas around the Welsh coastline.
Co-ordinated by the Wales Coasts and Seas Partnership, the Welsh Ocean Literacy Coalition is continuing to expand as a network and is developing ways to deliver the aims of 'Y Môr a Ni' at local and national levels for individuals, communities and partners across Wales.
Y Môr a Ni (or ‘The Sea and Us’) is the name of the initiative which aims to connect everybody in Wales through a mutual love and respect for the coast.
Whether your livelihood depends on our marine environment, or you simply enjoy a stroll along the beach, we all have a relationship with our seas and coasts.
Y Môr a Ni, the first national Ocean Literacy strategy in Europe, spreads awareness of our impact on our seas, and how the sea affects each and every one of us. You can read the full strategy here.
Mary Tetley, BSAC CEO said:
Y Môr a Ni will bring together many organisations where we can share our passion and skills for the sea and bring together initiatives. Our hope is that we can show more people the accessibility of snorkelling and work on conservation projects with the Ocean Literacy Group and Wildlife Trust.
We are delighted to be getting involved with Y Môr a Ni and are looking forward to seeing more people have access to our beautiful Welsh Coasts.
Reece Halstead of the North Wales Wildlife Trust said:
Y Môr a Ni are thrilled that BSAC have joined the Welsh Ocean Literacy Coalition. Our seas and coasts can seem like a distant world for many people, so it’s great to join forces with BSAC to allow even more communities across Wales to explore our precious marine environment through diving, snorkelling and activities along the coast.
The more that people can safely experience our seas, the more likely they are to care and to help protect them for generations to come.
