Is 2025 the year you plan to learn something new, to challenge yourself or to broaden your horizons? Then scuba diving will tick all your New Year ‘must-do’ boxes.

Learning to dive can be truly life-changing and will open up a whole new underwater world that will inspire, challenge and captivate you. Before you take the plunge, here are our top five reasons to take up scuba diving in 2025.

Learn to scuba dive

Explore the ocean

The ocean covers 71% of the earth's surface, and scuba diving allows you to explore this stunning underwater environment. When you learn to dive, a whole new world opens up, and your sub-aqua explorations will make magical memories to last a lifetime.

With scuba, you will experience sights that relatively few people get to see: diverse marine life in its natural habitat, sunken wrecks, stunning coral reefs…and so much more.  And as a scuba explorer, you can also help make a difference by using your new-found diving skills to protect our oceans.

From marine life courses and underwater monitoring projects to beach cleans and marine conservation campaigns, as a diver, there are many ways you can champion our ocean environment and contribute to its protection.

Improve your health

As well as taking you to some of the most remarkable places on the earth, scuba diving can also be good for your physical and mental health. As you learn to dive, you will find that you have improved your breath control, lowered your blood pressure, and increased your aerobic fitness.

From lifting your cylinders and kitting up to practising in the pool and spending time with your dive buddies on and under the water, scuba can also be a great form of exercise. Not only that, but spending time in the natural environment, with friends, and focusing on enjoying being under the water can also be a fantastic way to help reduce stress.

Build confidence and learn new skills

Learning to dive can be a life-changing journey that can boost your confidence and personal skills.

Scuba requires a lot of focus and attention, and working progressively to master the core diving skills can significantly increase your self-confidence. You will also develop essential skills such as teamwork, presentation skills, planning, problem-solving, effective communication (under the water as well as on the dive boat!) and how to remain cool under pressure. Add in practical skills such as first aid and safety management, and learning to dive can also benefit in other areas of your work and personal life.

Meet new people

Diving communities are social groups where you can meet like-minded people.  The beauty of diving is that you are all focused on the same thing – safely enjoying everything that scuba has to offer!

At the heart of BSAC diving is the buddy system – and the social side of diving is key to cementing partnerships that will transfer to the underwater environment. And this means safe and enjoyable diving and the opportunity to share all these fantastic experiences with someone else.

Out of the water, there is so much else to enjoy as part of a BSAC club. From running activities to social nights, group trips and special events, as a BSAC diver you are sure to make scuba friendships to last a lifetime.
