Main image: BSAC project Operation Oyster receives grant funding
During summer 2026 the British Sub-Aqua Jubilee Trust (BSAJT) has awarded four grants totalling £6,000 in support of UK diving projects.
The BSAJT has awarded grants to fund four UK-based diving projects, with an emphasis on projects that are looking into aspects of the underwater environment.
An award of £2,000 was made to both:
- Kerry Robinson and Corby & District Sub Aqua Club (CADSAC) to undertake ecological monitoring of a defined stretch of the River Nene, using divers to observe and record freshwater invertebrate communities from the riverbed, something that cannot be done from the bank alone. The funding will enable the club to turn an initial pilot into an ongoing monitoring program and give volunteers the tools and training to better understand and care for the freshwater environment on their doorstep.
- Marine Champion Mel Hough and Flintshire SAC has been awarded a grant to establish a club-focused citizen science project researching sponge species in the Menai Strait.
Other grants of £1,000 have been made for development of previous projects:
- Andy Hunt for the Mull Oyster Expedition as a development of Operation Oyster.
- Mark Beattie-Edwards and Nautical Archaeology Sub-Aqua Club (NASAC) for a project to document the Klein Hollandia shipwreck off Eastbourne. The project is to conduct a detailed non-intrusive examination and documentation of the visible timber ship structure. For this the project will undertake and digitally draw up a photogrammetry survey of the timbers together with collecting marine biodiversity data for submission to Seasearch.
Chair of the BSAJT, Gavin Anthony welcomed the Trust’s opportunity to support these projects and particularly that many applications this year have been environmentally based and in part an outcome of establishing the Marine Champions.
