Think snorkelling is only done abroad, on holiday, in crystal clear blue waters? Well, there are so many more adventurous and FUN snorkelling opportunities for qualified BSAC snorkellers to try! Here are five ideas to consider for the new year…

1. Snorkel an inland site

Most people think of inland sites as diver-only territory — but places like Stoney CoveVobster Quay and Capernwray make brilliant UK snorkelling destinations too.

Clear water, interesting features and easy access points create relaxed, enjoyable snorkels for all abilities. They’re ideal for practising skills, trying new kit, building confidence or simply enjoying a peaceful, freshwater environment.

Why not arrange a club meet-up and explore these sites from a snorkeller’s perspective?

2. Organise a remote snorkel expedition

Expeditions aren’t just for scuba divers — they’re part of BSAC’s adventurous spirit for all members. A snorkelling expedition can be as simple as a weekend away somewhere new, or as ambitious as a trip to the Outer HebridesShetland, or one of Scotland’s remote sea lochs.

These wild locations offer fantastic visibility, thriving marine life and that magical feeling of being far from the everyday. Planning an expedition builds teamwork, confidence and leadership within your club — and the memories last for years.

3. Try night snorkelling

If you’ve never snorkelled after dark, 2026 is the perfect year to give it a go. Night snorkelling transforms familiar waters: bioluminescence sparkles, nocturnal creatures emerge and the whole experience becomes more atmospheric and exciting.

Choose a safe, sheltered site and make sure everyone is briefed, visible and carrying suitable lights. For many members, night snorkelling becomes an instant favourite.

4. Snorkel a river

River snorkelling is one of the UK’s hidden gems. Gentle freshwater drift snorkels reveal trout, eels, minnows and striking aquatic plants — a completely different environment from the coast.

Stretches of the WyeDeeAvon and other rivers (with landowner permissions and careful assessment of flow and safety) offer rewarding, relaxed adventures.

It’s a brilliant option for snorkellers looking to broaden their experience and explore something truly unique.

5. Explore a tidal pool

Tidal pools are some of the UK’s most accessible and fascinating snorkel spots. Safe, shallow and full of marine life, they’re perfect for members of all experience levels.

From the natural pools of Wales and Cornwall to the man-made tidal baths of the north-east, each one offers colourful seaweeds, wrasse, blennies, anemones and more.
