Exeter SAC’s new Marine Champion Sally Richards has hit the ground running getting her club members involved in diving with an environmental purpose.

The South West-based club’s recent Halloween event started with an informative presentation by Sally and the team on underwater litter picks, followed by an engaging discussion as the club prepared for an underwater clean up. And in true BSAC club-style, several Exeter SAC members even dressed up to mark the spooky occasion!

Just a few days later, and 12 members from the club gathered on a cold November morning to help clean up underwater at Babbacombe Breakwater and the surrounding area.

The diving team were supported topside by other club members and their families before a well-earned cooked breakfast at a local café.

Speaking after the clean-up, Sally said everyone thoroughly enjoyed the morning. She said:

It was a challenge as the visibility wasn't at its best but all the divers managed to retrieve lots of old fishing tackle and rubbish without anyone getting tangled up. Divers also found a lobster and cat shark entangled in old line and managed to release them safely.

Thanks to the success of their clean up, the club is now looking forward to more regular underwater litter picking next year.
