A recent study into the benefits of being close to water has confirmed what BSAC members have known for a long time - spending time close to lakes, rivers and the sea has a positive impact on mental health and well-being.

People tend to feel happier, less stressed and have positive social interactions in blue spaces compared to other outdoor locations. Commenting on this Eugene Farrell said:

“This Blue Health gain is really something we’ve always felt in scuba diving. You’re doing an activity you enjoy, with friends, seeing amazing marine life and gaining new skills.”

A further study of coastal visits shows that 271 million recreational visits to the coast were made in 2017 and BSAC members will have made their contribution. If you’re lucky enough to live by the sea then you’re also likely to experience lower symptoms of mental distress. For more information on Blue Health visit: www.bluehealth2020.eu
