Berwickshire Marine Reserve is set to host Scotland’s very first Snorkel Festival on 28th and 29th June.
Created by the Berwick Marine Reserve team, the festival will celebrate the six snorkel sites that are within the reserve which also feature in the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s relaunched Scottish Snorkel Trails.
Working in collaboration with Scottish Wildlife Trust, Blue Marine Foundation, Blue Adventures, Snorkelology, and BSAC Centres St Abbs Charters and Snorkel Wild, the event aims to raise the profile of the snorkel trail to snorkellers as well as encourage non-snorkellers into the water to give the trails a go.
The weekend will see guided snorkel tours as well as introductory sessions for beginners and a festival photography competition. Topside, there will be a range of snorkel and marine life-related talks and workshops for the whole family to enjoy.
Berwick Marine Reserve is the only voluntary marine reserve in Scotland and covers 8km of coastline between the fishing towns of Eyemouth and St Abbs.
Chair of the Reserve, Sally Walsh, said the festival was a fantastic way to enjoy some of the best snorkelling in the marine reserve while learning more about the marine environment. She said:
We are thrilled to celebrate the incredible world of Scottish snorkelling here in the Berwickshire Marine Reserve. This festival is a fantastic opportunity to introduce new people to the joys of snorkelling while showcasing the breathtaking trails, stunning coastline, and vibrant marine life that make this area so special.
Organisers hope the Snorkel Festival will become a Scotland-wide annual event.
