Do you want to improve your chances of survival at sea in an emergency? This workshop has been developed by the RNLI in association with the British Diving Safety Group to improve diver safety at sea.
The workshop aims to refresh existing safety and rescue skills as well as introducing techniques for improving surface location and survival skills in an emergency.
Any training that gets you to reconsider your diving safety is worthwhile attending and the Diver Sea Survival workshop did just that. Things that you take for granted are looked upon in a new light with cutting-edge technology highlighted as a possible lifesaver. A course all divers whatever their grade should consider.

If you want to know more about sea survival techniques for divers this workshop is for you. To enrol on the course you must have already successfully completed a minimum of an Ocean Diver course (or have equivalent certification from another recognised training agency).
The one-day Diver Sea Survival Workshop consists of a theory presentation, a dive-planning session – including risk assessment, chartwork and weather – and two dives, during which you will develop and refresh your skills, including responses to out-of-gas emergencies and in-water rescues.
Advice is given on how to call for help and remain visible on the surface, including use of location equipment, and further techniques for survival on the surface. You will also learn about diver and boat-related safety equipment.
This workshop is a great way to practice and refresh existing skills and introduce new ones giving you a broad knowledge of, and practice in, sea-survival techniques.

After this course you could further your training by doing other Skill Development Courses (SDCs).
You could further your safety and rescue training by completing the following SDCs.
- Learn to use what’s around you on a dive site to deliver first aid on a First Aid for Divers course.
- Learn to use oxygen first aid on an Oxygen Administration course.
- Improve your lifesaving skills by taking the Lifesaver Award, then the Advanced Lifesaver Award.
- Learn how to take control of a rescue situation on a Practical Rescue Management course.
You could sign up for BSAC’s Instructor Foundation Course (IFC) to become an Assistant Diving Instructor, or develop your existing skills as an Open Water Instructor, or above, to be able to teach this workshop.
Or you could progress with your diver grade training.
