Successful recruiter Lisburn Sub Aqua Club shares what they did to recruit more members using video and Facebook

Social media, and in particular, Facebook offers clubs a fantastic way to do this by getting your message in front of a big audience with relatively little effort.

What works best for clubs?

Having a public Facebook Page is the first big step. Closed groups are great for members to chat but a public Page is like your shop window where you get to show off the best of your club.

Attract new members using social media

If you want to attract new members show you’re actively diving and maybe have a great social programme. If you have Instructors and training facilities then highlight that so people know that they can learn to dive with someone local and don’t have to travel far or even learn abroad. Photos are great at catching people’s attention and at Lisburn SAC we’ve found that video is even better.

How video has worked well for us

We were hosting a Try Dive event as part of an initiative called Get Wet NI and used a video from a previous Try Dive event published on Facebook to generate interest.

The Video was mainly clips of people saying how good it had been and how much they enjoyed the experience. We added subtitles as people don’t always have the sound turned up when browsing Facebook and allocated £10 to boost the post.

We had to turn the promotion off after 3 days as all the available slots were filled. The cost was about £4 as the promotion ran for such a short time.

A video about our last Ocean Diver course proved very useful in generating interest in our next course. It gave a few reasons why people wanted to learn to dive, showed some of the course activity from classroom to pool and finally the sea and included some feedback from those taking part.

Social Media stats

Facebook allows you to see how well your post is performing with insights. Our Ocean Diver video reached 1,578 people in a very short space of time for the princely sum of £5!

As we had defined our audience these people all lived in Northern Ireland and were already interested in Outdoor Sports. A ready-made source of new members!

If you don’t want to pay for advertising get your members who are on Facebook to share posts from the Club’s page to extend your reach for free.

Making quick and easy recruitment videos

You can easily shoot surface video or interviews on mobile phones or home camcorders. Underwater cameras such as GoPros, often owned by members can provide great underwater pictures.

There are a number of free video editing programmes available from straight forward to fully featured that you can use to put your video together. YouTube provide royalty free music that you can use.
