Information from local organiser

Vectis Expeditions, in conjunction with support from Halton Charters, is planning an expedition to South West Mull in April 2024.

Whilst the Sound of Mull is one of the most popular wreck diving destinations in the UK, the rest of the waters around Mull offer some equally superb diving but require more effort to access.  This is where our expedition boat MV Clasina comes into its own as the UK’s premier diving expedition boat.

Departing from Oban we plan to sail west diving a mix of wrecks, walls and reefs along the way.  Possible wrecks along the way include SS Breda (our usual shakedown dive), the SS Meldon, SS Cathcartpark, SS Nyland, SS Ostende (ammunition ship which blew up).  Scenic sites include the Garvellachs, Torran Rocks and the Lochs around SW Mull.  Most sites are comfortable nitrox range (20-30m) but some sites can go deeper (especially the walls/pinnacles).

We plan to run an BSAC/Seawilding Underwater Surveyor Course as an option and so will aim to drop by some ongoing project sites in Loch Craignish on the way home.

However, I’m also super excited about exploring some new sites and following some tip offs about location of native flat oysters, mearl beds and seagrass we’ll see what else we can find.  A small remnant and undisturbed population of native flat oysters would be a great find!

We will be going off grid a little and in places there will be no mobile phone reception, wifi or internet.

This expedition will be another great opportunity for divers working towards BSAC Advanced Diver to tick a few more of those experience boxes.

Of course the weather is always an unknown quantity but the last couple of years we have had good weather and excellent underwater visibility at this time of year.  The beauty of this part of the country is that lee shores with good diving are never too far away so we have lots of excellent exploratory Plan B options.
