Sheffield University shipped an impressive 47 divers to l’Estartit in Spain, home to one of the Med’s longest established marine sanctuaries.
CLUB: Sheffield University Sub-Aqua Club
DESTINATION: Getting the party started in L’Estartit
OBJECTIVES: A fun trip to warmer climates for great diving, ad-hoc training opportunities, and a post-dive jug of sangria.
The trip
SUSAC’s annual Easter trip has become the highlight of the club calendar, and the 2025 outing was no different. A total of 46 divers plus one chief cat-herder headed to sunny Spain and were amused to discover they’d come on holiday with Wayne Rooney upon running into him at the pirate bar on the first few nights (sadly he didn’t come diving).

Octopus action on the reef
It’s no mean feat organising so many divers, but each day our Sports Divers rose to the challenge of organising buddy pairs, ropes-off times, and identifying opportunities for newer divers to extend their experience with an instructor.
The underwater photographers snapped away at the octopuses, moray eels, and groupers, arguing over who got the best shot while bemoaning their lack of macro lens to capture the many nudibranchs spotted over the week. Meanwhile, the rest of us enjoyed the warm water and planning what tapas to try on the surface interval.
The week flew by and before we knew it we were celebrating the last dive in style by jumping off the top of the boats into the lagoon, shouts and cheers echoing around the cove, the perfect way to end another fantastic Easter trip.
Logbook moment
The last night of the holiday was the hotly anticipated trip social, with mandatory song title-themed fancy-dress. Almost as legendary as the trip itself, experienced members led first timers through SUSAC traditions such as songs, late night swims and... bird impressions!
