Technical diving conference Guz.Tech returns for its third edition on Saturday 28th November 2026 at the Roland Levinsky Building, University of Plymouth.

Taking its name from the old naval nickname for Plymouth, Guz.Tech brings together wreck explorers, cave divers, scientists and equipment developers for a single-day programme spanning the breadth of technical diving - from 1908 destroyers on the bed of the English Channel to flooded chambers in southern Africa.

Fran Hockley, one of the Guz.Tech organisers, said:

This is our third year of Guz.Tech, and each conference we try to put together a programme that has something for everyone. This year it's really come together - wreck exploration, cave expeditions, cutting-edge technology, and the science behind it all. We're very excited, and I think it's going to be the best one yet.

BSAC will be having a trade stand at the conference on the day.

The 2026 speaker line-up

  • Leo Fielding and Dan McMullen — The discovery of HMS Tiger. This summer the ProjectXplore team located the wreck of the Royal Navy torpedo boat destroyer HMS Tiger, lost off the Isle of Wight in 1908 after being cut in two by the cruiser HMS Berwick. Found after five years of archival research, Tiger was the last missing 30-knot destroyer in the Channel. Fielding and McMullen tell the story of the search, the survey and the identification.
  • Mark Dixon - Diving the great ocean liners. Decades of exploration with the Darkstar team on some of the most demanding liner and warship wrecks accessible to divers.
  • Leigh Bishop - One of the best-known names in deep wreck exploration presents a selection of his most remarkable finds.
  • Jen Smith - The Protection of Military Remains Act and what changes next. New provisions currently before Parliament would give automatic protection to military wrecks from the moment of discovery. Smith examines what the changes mean in practice for technical divers visiting wreck sites.
  • Dr Mark Turner - Diving physiology and the PFO question. A consultant cardiologist specialising in patent foramen ovale presents his research and what it means for divers.
  • Oliver Scholl - Cave exploration in Southern Africa. Expeditions to Dragon's Breath, the largest non-subglacial underground lake in the world, and exploration and mapping of the Chinhoyi caves.
  • Tim Clements - Deep reef exploration in the Hebrides. Diver-led survey work on some of the least-documented reef habitat in UK waters.
  • Dimitris Fifis - The Halcyon Symbios rebreather. A close look at the chest-mounted CCR that has been one of the most talked-about pieces of kit of the past two years.
