BSAC fact file

  • BSAC (British Sub-Aqua Club) is the UK national governing body for scuba diving and snorkelling. It has a network of clubs, run by volunteers, up and down the country and abroad.
  • The club diving experience is at the heart of BSAC – our clubs are run by dedicated and enthusiastic members who simply love diving! By joining a BSAC club you are able to dive, train and participate in a full range of training and social activities as well as weekend diving trips to coastal or inland sites and diving holidays.
  • HRH, The Duke of Cambridge is BSAC’s President. He took over the role in 2014, continuing a family tradition – his father and grandfather were previous BSAC Presidents.
  • BSAC represents more than 28,000 scuba divers and snorkellers and welcomes new members from complete beginners upwards, including those who have trained with other agencies.
  • From absolute beginner to the more experienced, BSAC provides an extensive training programme that enables divers (and snorkellers) to progress through skills and qualifications at their own pace. You can learn to dive with BSAC from the age of 10 and there is no upper age limit.
  • BSAC’s diving qualifications are internationally-recognised – literally opening up a whole world of scuba adventures.
  • 100,000s of people have learned to dive with BSAC and have gone on to discover the wonders of the underwater world, both at home and overseas.
  • BSAC develops its own safety recommendations to keep scuba as safe as it can be for all divers. As the national governing body, BSAC has recorded and reported on diving incidents since 1964.
  • BSAC aims to promote and protect the UK’s underwater and wreck heritage, through a programme of diver education, skills training and collaborative working with other agencies, including the Receiver of Wreck, Nautical Archaeology Society, and Marine Management Organisation.
  • BSAC and its members also work to safeguard the UK’s precious waters and marine life to ensure they can be enjoyed by future generations of divers. BSAC works closely with the Marine Conservation Society and other conservation organisations calling for more marine reserves around the UK to ensure greater protection of our underwater environment.
