Deeper Diver provides Dive Leaders and above with the opportunity to safely extend their diving on open circuit up to 50m.
The Deeper Diver Skill Development Course (SDC) has been specifically designed to increase flexibility for students, offering a choice between eLearning and in-club theory teaching.
BSAC was the first agency to introduce nitrox into the core Diver Training Programme and is now the first to introduce trimix. Deeper Diver provides Dive Leaders with the right tools to extend their own diving limits.
- Alex Warzynski, BSAC’s Technical Chief Examiner
Following the 2023 revamp of Dive Leader - which saw its post-qualification progression depth set at 40m - Deeper Diver provides Dive Leaders and above with the opportunity to safely extend their diving on open circuit up to 50m.
To enrol on the Deeper Diver course you must be a current BSAC member, and have already successfully completed a minimum of BSAC Dive Leader (or equivalent), including nitrox, and be qualified to plan and complete decompression diving.
The course is only relevant for divers using open circuit equipment.
As qualified Deeper Divers, students will be able to dive using a weak trimix (a minimum of 20% oxygen, maximum 40% helium) or choose nitrox or air and make risk-based decisions about diving to depths greater than those previously encountered.
Deeper Diver theory includes:
- Diving physics and physiology
-
Decompression planning
-
Gas planning and limiting factors.
As qualified Deeper Divers, students will be able to dive using a weak trimix (a minimum of 20% oxygen, maximum 40% helium) or choose nitrox or air and make risk-based decisions about diving to depths greater than those previously encountered.
Deeper Diver will form part of a suite of linked SDCs, which include Buoyancy and Trim, Accelerated Decompression Procedures (ADP), Twin-set/Sidemount, and the yet-to-be launched Propulsion (finning), which can all be taught in-club. Once all have completed, members will be awarded their Sports Mixed Gas qualification.

Your next steps – developing your skills
After completing Deeper Diver and consolidating your skills, your options for diving significantly expand.
- You can develop your open-circuit mixed-gas diving skills on a Sport Mixed Gas Diver (50m) course. This is an introduction to using trimix gases to reduce narcosis on dives to a maximum depth of 50m.
- You could learn closed-circuit diving skills using an AP Diving rebreather or a Poseidon Se7en, on a unit-specific Closed Circuit Rebreather (CCR) Diver (40m) course.
- You could develop specific skills to expand your diving interests further. Imagine understanding more about wreck diving, driving a dive boat or becoming an underwater photographer. Check out the Skill Development Courses (SDCs) you can get involved in.
- You could sign up for BSAC’s Instructor Foundation Course (IFC) to become an Assistant Diving Instructor, or develop your existing skills as an Open Water Instructor, or above, to become a Technical Instructor.
