Britain's Secret Seas part 2: The Wild North
In the second programme of the series, explorer and BSAC diver Paul Rose and the team explore the wild seas around Scotland.
The Secret Seas team travel to Bass Rock, one the largest gannet colonies in the world. They are there to try and discover why, when most British seabird populations are in decline, the Northern Gannet is bucking the trend. Paul also goes beneath the waves to witness the amazing diving ability of Britain's largest seabird that can reach depths of up to 20m.
Tooni Mahto joins a scientist in St Andrews Bay in search of the Bottlenose Dolphin before joining Paul on a spectacular night dive at St Abbs in search of the amazing sea creatures that fluoresce beyond our visual spectrum.
Expedition leader Paul then meets the Naval men who keep us safe from the bombs that are a legacy of the First and Second World Wars. They are working on a special clearance mission around Garvie Island at Cape Wrath, the only military range in Europe where 1000lb bombs can be dropped.
With over 25,000 wrecks around the British Isles, the UK coastline is a rich archaeological record of our maritime history. Frank Pope and Paul travel to the Sound of Mull to see first hand what can be done to preserve the history locked away in these relics. They've both dived one of Britain's most popular wrecks, the World War Two wreck of The Breda before - Paul nearly 30 years ago - how much will she have changed in the intervening years?
