NDO to take the Dunker Challenge!
BSAC’s National Diving Officer Jeff Reed is to ‘Escape the Dunker’ in aid of the Commando Spirit appeal.
Set to take place this September, Jeff - alongside a small group of other fundraisers and with the support of his 'buddy' fomer Royal Marine and now TV presenter Monty Halls - will take on the infamous ‘Dunker’ – a tough Royal Marines training exercise which simulates a helicopter crash at sea.
After rigorous training, Jeff will be put through his paces in the simulation, which will involve being strapped into a mock fuselage and submerged at speed, before he has to escape.
The ‘Escape the Dunker’ Challenge is part of the Commando Spirit series of fundraising challenges aiming to raise £1m for the fund by 2014 - the 350th anniversary of the Corps.
Jeff will be aiming to raise as much money as he can for the fund, which works to support former and serving Royal Marines and their families, in need.
With the Marines known as the ‘aquatic fighting force’, Jeff role as BSAC NDO as well as his ‘day job’ means he is well-placed to support the cause.
“Working in the oil and gas sector, I am aware of many heroic but also sad stories involving helicopter crashes. This is my opportunity to gain a personal insight into what goes through the mind of a Royal Marine when confronted with such an incident.”
Sally-Anne Hunter, from Commando Spirit, said she was delighted that Jeff was on board. “It is people like Jeff, showing that they have what it takes to face the Dunker, who will ensure we reach our £1million target and make a real and long-lasting difference to our Royal Marines.”
