Meet Allen Murray
I'm 48 and have been diving for 13 years now. It was one of those chance things, seeing a poster for a try-dive in the bar at my local squash courts one night after a game and then getting hooked and doing my Novice Diver with the Diver Training Academy in Exmouth in Devon. However, the school didn't have a club so I rang BSAC who put me in touch with the area coach who just happened to be a member of Totnes BSAC, and there I've been ever since! In the early years I progressed quickly and gained my Advanced Diver grade in 1996, the same year I became club Secretary. Over the next few years I built up my experience both as a diver and within the club, being Treasurer, Chairman and finally Diving Officer from 2001 to 2003. It was on completion of my 3 year stint as DO that I began to think about furthering my skills as a diver again, although I had attended a number of Skill Development Courses over the years. Totnes is lucky in having lots of very experienced divers and instructors in the club, and a number had suggested to me that I should move forward. It was therefore with some trepidation that I attended the Instructor Foundation Course in Cambridge in 2004 and, having enjoyed it immensely, the Open Water Instructor Course in Brixham in April 2005, sitting the Theory Instructor Exam the following day (fingers crossed!) So what's next? Well there's the Practical Instructor Exam of course, but it's also been suggested that I should have a go at the First Class Diver Exam. Now this really is a daunting prospect, but I am considering it, albeit on an extended timescale to suit all my diving commitments! I'm trying to improve and consolidate my diving knowledge with a view to taking the theory exam in the autumn and to this end have had a really useful prep session with Sophie Rennie the South West Regional Coach earlier in the year, and, if I pass, then I'll work on the expedition plan over the winter and look at doing the practical next year, but there's lots to do first, so no counting chickens…… Oh, and did I mention that I'm now club Equipment Officer! ![]() |
