1st Mar 04 Malaysia - Borneo - Borneo and Layang Layang by Richard Scarsbrook Borneo is a large island about 600 miles wide and 700 miles tall straddling the equator about 600 miles SE of Vietnam
25th Aug 08 Malaysia - Layang Layang by Wendy & Peter Male We spent 6 days on Layang Layang as part of a six week tour of Borneo in August 2008. Layang Layang is an atoll in the South China Sea some 300 km north-west of Kota Kinabalu. The island is man-made and was constructed for the Malaysian Navy and later developed for the only dive resort, the Layang-Layang Island Resort. We booked direct with Layang Layang. We were up early for a check in at 5am for the flight to Layang Layang. Not that we needed to worry about arriving at the prescribed check in time as the agent wasn’t there until 5.15! This was a flight on a baby plane - a DHC-6 Twin Otter, which is a 20-passenger STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) utility aircraft developed by de Havilland Canada. It has often been called the most successful aircraft program in Canada's history. The aircraft's fixed tricycle undercarriage, STOL abilities and relatively high rate of climb have made it a successful cargo, regional passenger airliner and MEDEVAC aircraft. The reason for such a small plane is that Layang Layang’s runway is only 1000m long.
