Do you want to play a key role in protecting our precious marine environment? Then become a BSAC Marine Champion!
BSAC is looking to establish a volunteer network of Marine Champions who will work within their own clubs to deliver a range of grassroots environmental initiatives.
This new role will be at the heart of BSAC’s mission to ‘be the go-to community for anyone wanting to learn about, enjoy and protect the underwater world’.
Our BSAC Marine Champions will be part of a positive wave for change, not just in preserving the marine environment, but also in helping their fellow divers and snorkellers to experience the fulfilment of diving with a purpose.
Katherine Knight, Chair – BSAC Environment Committee
We aim to recruit at least 50 Marine Champions this year, before expanding the network during 2026 and beyond.
The role of Marine Champion
BSAC’s network of Marine Champions will be volunteers aged 18 or over who are passionate about diving with an environmental purpose and can spread the word about marine conservation.
While some knowledge or experience in marine conservation is desirable, enthusiasm and commitment are just as important. Relevant support and additional training can be made available to ensure all our Marine Champions thrive in their exciting new role.
As a BSAC Marine Champion, you will be asked to:
- Work closely with your club members, Branch Officers and BSAC’s Environment Committee.
- Attend occasional online Marine Champion meet-ups, updates and training events.
- Coordinate marine conservation activities such as Underwater Litter Picks, beach cleans, seagrass and oyster surveys within your club.
- Develop and lead on your own club’s ‘in-house’ marine conservation projects.
- Share your marine environment project successes.
- Support your club to get involved in BSAC’s wider marine environment messaging and associated campaigns.
For more information on the role and how it can work within your club, check out our Marine Champions Information Pack.

Then apply now to become a Marine Champion!
The role of a BSAC Marine Champion is an important one. You’ll not just be helping your club members get more enjoyment and fulfilment out of their club experiences, but you will be inspiring and instigating positive action for ocean health.
To apply to become a BSAC Marine Champion, you need to be:
- Aged 18 or over
- A member of a BSAC club - before applying to become a Marine Champion, you will need to get the endorsement of your club’s committee. Check out our FAQs for more guidance.
We are looking for one Marine Champion per club. While it is anticipated that many Marine Champions will be active diving members, this is not essential. Marine Champions could equally be snorkelling members or non-diving club members.
If you have any questions about the initiative, please email the Marine Champions team at marinechampions@bsac.com
