Each year, the Heinke Adjudicators review all the applications to decide which club will be awarded the coveted trophy.
The Heinke Adjudicating Team have in-depth knowledge and personal experience of as well as a lifelong passion for BSAC and club diving.
Here’s a little more about them:
Phil Harrison, MBE
BSAC CV: Joined in 1975. National Instructor and First Class Diver, former BSAC Chair. Phil was awarded an MBE in 2011 for services to scuba diving.
What does the Heinke Trophy mean to you? I have had the privilege of seeing entries and hearing about the exploits of clubs all over the world. This enthusiasm for diving, expeditions, projects to improve the underwater heritage and great social times together make me very happy to be a Heinke adjudicator.
Why should a club enter this year’s award?
I have seen how the Heinke Trophy application process has really helped clubs come together, with members realising what they’ve achieved. And it also puts the spotlight on their teamwork: new and more experienced members all working together, using a range of skills within the branch to create their final entry.
And, if your club has something to celebrate, then the Heinke is also a way to make that even more memorable. Go for it, get a team together and enter!
Tony Marshall
BSAC CV: Joined London No.1 branch in 1961; currently a dual member of New Cross BSAC and Hackney BSAC. First Class Diver, Advanced Instructor, Instructor Trainer and BSAC Vice President.
Favourite thing about BSAC club diving? Introducing and enabling new divers of all ages into sport diving through our branch system in a safe, exciting, enjoyable and friendly club atmosphere.
What does the Heinke Trophy mean to you? My diving company was started by Ron Collins and Harry Chambers, both ex-employees of C.E Heinke, who hugely supported BSAC training in 1958. At that time, former BSAC Chairman George Brookes established the Heinke Trophy which has gone on to recognise over 68 years of historical diving activity through the BSAC club structure, nationally and overseas.
Kevin Phillips
BSAC CV: Joined Hartford SAC in 1978; now a member of East Cheshire SAC – winner of the Heinke Trophy 2016. Advanced Diver, Open Water Instructor, Advanced Trimix and CCR diver.
Favourite thing about BSAC club diving? Working with a team and a great group of friends. Also to be able to support and develop new divers so they can enjoy the sport I love.
Why should a club enter this year’s award? It is an opportunity to bring a club together, celebrate its history and develop projects that benefit its members.
If your club would benefit from an injection of energy, delivery of a number of interesting projects, engagement with the members and potentially other clubs as well, then it’s well worth having a go. My advice would be plan ahead, drive your Heinke year and capture the application as the year progresses. Whether you win or not, it is a great thing to do and should be a benefit to your club.
